Abstract

Politeness is about showing respect to others, being aware of other people’s feelings and needs, and maintaining their faces. This study aimed to describe the politeness strategies used by the three main characters —Jack, Rose, and Cal—in Titanic movie, and to explain why they use those strategies. The research approach used was descriptive qualitative research. The data were the script of the Titanic movie containing polite expressions uttered by three characters. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively following the model by Miles and Huberman—data reduction, data display, and data verification/conclusion. The research findings revealed that negative politeness strategy, positive politeness strategy, Bald-on-record strategy, and off-record strategy were used by the three characters, and therefore provide additional data/examples supporting politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987). The use of these politeness strategies was very much influenced by the social class/status of the characters. However, a new interesting finding revealed that the negative politeness strategy was used by the speaker not only to respect the listener but also to disrespect and mask an insult to the listener.
