Abstract

ABSTRACT Sabila, Arum Nurul. 2024. Challenges and strategies in academic reading for international students in English education programs at Universitas Jambi. A Thesis, English education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Universitas Jambi in Academic Year 2024/2025. The first supervisor is Dr. Sri Wachyunni, S.S., M.Hum., MA. The second supervisor is Muhammad Fauzan, S.Pd., M.Pd. Key words: academic reading, challenges, reading strategies, This study aimed to identify challenges in academic reading and devise strategies to overcome them for international students in the 3rd semester of English study program at Universitas Jambi. The research method used was qualitative, utilizing interview as data collection tools. The results of the research show that international students face some challenges in academic reading. Some of the most common challenges are difficulties in understanding new words and the most commonly used strategy is scanning. The findings show that international students most often face challenges in understanding new words and texts written in complex languages. From the research, what the most frequently used strategy to overcome challenges in academic reading by international students is scanning. This study makes a significant contribution to understanding challenges and strategies in academic reading.
