Abstract
This research aims to explore the strategies used by Jambi University English Department students in memorizing new vocabulary. This research uses a quantitative descriptive approach. The population in this study was all active students in the English Education study program, which amounted to approximately 600 students. From the total population, 30% was selected as the sample, resulting in 200 students participating in this study. In the sampling technique, this study used a random sampling technique. The results show that English Education students use various strategies to memorize new vocabulary. From the data analysis, it was found that the most frequently used strategy among the students was the metacognitive strategy, specifically the use of English media such as songs, movies, and news broadcasts, with an average score of 4.46. This strategy is considered effective as it facilitates comprehension and retention of new vocabulary. On the other hand, the least used strategies were social strategies, mainly asking the lecturer to translate words into the native language 2.69 and asking the lecturer to explain vocabulary synonyms 2.79. The study showed that the use of media such as music and movies proved to be an effective strategy in helping students remember and understand new vocabulary, as they not only provide real contexts of word usage but also make the learning process more interesting and less boring. Therefore, both lecturers and students need to actively implement and integrate these media-based strategies into English learning activities, so that vocabulary acquisition becomes more optimal and sustainable.
