Abstract
This research aimed to explore the strategies used by student teachers to motivate students in learning English during the Kampus Mengajar Program, as well as the challenges they faced and how they overcame them. The study employed a mixed-method approach by combining quantitative and qualitative data. The data were collected from 180 student teachers who participated in Kampus Mengajar batches 6, 7, and 8 and had experience teaching English at their placement schools. The findings revealed that student teachers used various strategies to motivate students, such as explaining learning objectives, helping with learning difficulties, arousing students’ interest through fun and interactive methods, and giving praise. Among all strategies, providing individual or group assistance for learning difficulties was the most frequently applied. Meanwhile, strategies such as giving rewards, holding competitions, and providing feedback on students’ work were used less frequently. In addition, the student teachers encountered several challenges, including low student motivation, limited exposure to English, lack of school facilities, and differences in students’ learning abilities. To address these issues, they implemented creative teaching methods, increased students’ exposure to English, and collaborated with school teachers. This study provides insights into effective motivational strategies in the context of teaching English in elementary and junior high schools, particularly for student teachers participating in community-based teaching programs.
