Abstract
This study aims to describe the structure of short stories and folktales; analyze the suitability of short stories and folktales; and explain the characteristics of short stories and folktales as Indonesian children's literature from the perspective of emotional intelligence. This is a descriptive qualitative study. The data analyzed are short stories and folktales. The data source is the Bobo Magazine: 50-Year Limited Edition Collection of Short Stories & Folktales. Data collection was carried out using reading and note-taking techniques. The results of the study show: first, the plot in most stories is linear or compact. The main characters are generally children or animals that behave or act like humans. The settings are familiar to children, such as home and school. The time setting is short, usually occurring within one or two days. The mood varies, commonly evoking sadness, emotion, annoyance, and joy. The titles reflect the theme of the story. The point of view used is first person, third person omniscient, or third person limited. The style is straightforward and simple, mostly delivered through dialogue. The tone typically shifts from gloomy or sad to cheerful, happy, or grateful. Symbolism involves concrete objects. Irony is expressed through contrasts between physical conditions and psychological or sociological states. The themes raised include friendship, family affection, gender justice, honesty, and heroism. Second, the short stories titled TKT, RTM, SUMK, TBA, DG, GRMA, and TUNS are categorized as children's literature. The short story CP is considered less appropriate as children's literature. The folktale LS is deemed suitable as children's literature. The folktale RDM is considered less suitable, while the folktales BDHLK, NDP, and GE are not categorized as children's literature. Third, only the short stories TKT, CP, SUMK, and GRMA fulfill all five levels of emotional intelligence. The short story RTM meets four levels. The folktale LS meets three levels. The short story TUNS meets two levels. The short stories TBA and DG, along with the folktale RDM, meet only one level of emotional intelligence. The conclusions drawn from this study are: first, the structure of short stories and folktales features simple and easily understood narrative structures. Each element demonstrates coherence and contributes to the development of the story. Second, the short stories and folktales can be categorized as children's literature because they meet the criteria of using direct and simple language, illustrations and pictures, an emphasis on action rather than narration, simple plot and setting, child or animal protagonists, and themes related to children's worlds. Third, the stories do not fully encompass all five levels of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence content generally appears at the level of recognizing and managing personal emotions. Skills such as self-motivation, recognizing others’ emotions, and the aspect of maintaining relationships with others has scarcely been depicted.
