Abstract
ABSTRACT Lestari, S. 2019. Developing an English syllabus for students of law at Jambi University. Thesis. English study program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2018/2019. The first supervisor: Yanto, S.Pd.,M.Ed and the second supervisor: TubagusZamZam Al Arif, S.Pd., M.Pd The objective of this study is to develop an English syllabus for undergraduate students of law at the University of Jambi. Research and Development were adopted as the research design while the model of develop used instructional design by Branch. Moreover, in English language teaching and learning processfor law study program, this study views from the perspective of ESP. ESP teaching approach is known to be learner-centred where learners’ needs and goals are of supreme value.Need analysis is the corestone before starting an ESP course. To get the data of students’ needs, questionnaire and interview were implemented in this research. The subjects of the research involved students of law at the second semester in academic year of 2018/2019.The study revealed that speaking skill is perceived as the most needed skill both in academic performance and for future job prospect. The syllabus is developed as a reflection of students’ needs. A combination of two approaches which are learning centered approach and task based approach were used in designing the syllabus. The learning centered approach was chosen because it brings the commitment to help students learn both content and process. Process refers to the skill they will need to meet the success as they are learning the content. Keywords: ESP, need analysis, students of law
