Abstract
The use of the first language in the teaching and learning process is often found in English as a foreign language (EFL) classes. In Indonesia, Bahasa Indonesia is also employed in many English classes. Of course, it cannot be denied that it might bring both advantages and disadvantages to the students. This study aimed to find out the English Department’s students’ perceptions toward the use of Bahasa Indonesia in Jambi University. The research employed a quantitative method in acquiring data. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the questionnaires had to be distributed in online survey through Google doc. The participants were 72 students from both 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 students of English department in Jambi Universiy. The findings revealed that most participants perceived the use of Bahasa Indonesia in their English classes with average total score 3.286 from 72 participants which is described as very positive.
