Abstract

The unforeseen arrival of the covid-19 virus brought for the educational sector suddenly changes that resulted in switching from face-to-face classes into remote teaching. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe teachers’experiences in teaching English online during pandemic. The theoretical framework of recelience theory was used to guide the study while the data were collected through demographic profiles and semi-structured in-depth interviews with teachers. The participants of this study were two senior high school English teachers. The results of the data analysis produced four salient themes emerged from the data: individual experiences (learning from the internet, experiencing positive feelings, experiencing negative feelings), contextual experiences (supported by school, supported by mentors), contextual risk factors (difficulties in managing students, dealing with students’ lack of comperhasion in vocabulary mastery, and dealing with internet connection), and individual risk factors (experiencing self-ekipety in preparing material and experiencing in managing time). In addition, two main themes related to strategies on how participants manage their protective factors in teaching English online during the pandemic were contextual protective factors (giving motivation and advisement to the students, implementing project based learning, used suitable aplications) and individual protective factors (giving material from the internet, and giving material before the learning process). The results show that there were both risk factors and protective factors in teaching English online. The most memorable experience felt by teachers was that they found difficult to manage students, but the teacher still rise in this difficult condition and continued the online learning.
