Abstract

Saktina, Noni. 2018. An Analysis of Figurative Language in Short Stories by Kate Chopin: Desiree's Baby, The Story of An Hour, A Pair of Silk Stockings. FKIP. Jambi University. The first supervisor is Dra.Armiwati, M.Hum and the second supervisor is Hustarna, S.Pd., M.A. ABSTRACT This research focuses on investigating the three kinds of figurative language (simile, metaphor, and symbol) in Kate Chopin’s short stories: Desiree’s Baby, The Story of An Hour, A Pair of Silk Stockings. The aims of this study were to interpret the contextual meaning of those kinds of figurative language related to the context in those short stories. The method used in this research was a descriptive qualitative. The source of the data was taken from Kate Chopin short stories: Desiree’s Baby, The Story of An Hour, A Pair of Silk Stockings from www. Americanliterature.com. The results of this study are the author uses simile, metaphor, and symbol to present the setting of places, events, social setting, behavior, and personality of the characters, especially the woman. There are also kinds of figurative language that expressing the idea related to the feminism by trying to find a true identity, their fight against standard womanhood, social restrictions imposed on a woman, and a woman’s experience of motherhood. The dominant figurative language in the short stories is the explicit simile. The author uses the simile to reveal a character’s personality, to describe a character’s behavior, and to make the readers ultimately imagine the place much better. It can be concluded that figurative language has important roles in the short stories. Key Words: Figurative Language, Short Story, Contextual Meaning
