Abstract

Journal reflection is one of the most important things for pre-service teachers in practicum teaching, so that this study aimed to analyze teaching experiences of pre-service English teachers focus on journal reflection, their perception of their experiences in writing journal reflection and provide some improvements and construction a new theory which can be used for teaching practicum in teacher education. This study was a qualitative study as grounded theory is used to analyzed the data. Ten pre-service English teachers were chosen purposively, they come from one Islamic public university in Jambi, they consist of eight female and two male students. The Documents and interviews were used as the technique of collecting the data. Both of data collections are analyzed by carrying out open coding system. The findings showed that the predominant theme that emerged through the analysis of both the interview and journal reflection for pre-service English teachers was predominantly about reflecting on their classroom teaching skills as demonstrated through their performance on teaching practice, and most of pre-service English teachers focused their reflection on the technical aspects of teaching and this was the first characteristic of a teaching- centric reflection that emerged from the data. Besides, identifying SWIS (Strength, weakness, and suggesting Improving in Teaching) was one of benefits in writing journal reflection. Finally, based on the theory and reflective diaries of participants the new framework of reflection was constructed.
