Abstract
ABSTRACT Nurhasiyanti 2023. The Analysis of Derivational Affixes in Thesis Writing Among English Education Students at Jambi Province University. A thesis. Master of English Education program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Jambi. The First Supervisor: Dr. Yanto, S.Pd, M.Pd. The Second Supervisor: Dr. Dra Yelia, M.Pd. The aims of this research were to identify the different kinds of affixations that are present in thesis writing and to examine the derivative affixations that are employed in the writing of theses by English language education students at Jambi province University. The study employed a qualitative research design and applied a descriptive-analytic methodology to the data. This investigation comprised nine theses from Jambi Province University, there are Universitas Jambi, Universitas Islam Negri Jambi, and Universitas Batang Hari Using the students' theses as an example, the research's findings demonstrated two type of affixation, there are prefixes and suffixes. There were 7 derivational prefixes “In-“, “Un-“, “En-“, “over-“, “dis-“, “Extra-, “inter-“, and “Re-“; and 19 derivational suffixes “-ive”, “- er”, “-tion”, “-ful”, “-ly”, “-al”, “-ence”, “-ty”, “-ry”, “-ent”, “-able”, “-ic”, “- ment”, “-ship”, “- ize”, “-ness”, “-able”, “-ate” and “- ous The analysis process of Derivative affixation. From the data of Adjectives was dealing with roots, bases, and stems. For example: explain + -ation = explanation. “Explain” was a root, then its base was “explanation”; describe + - ive = descriptive. Its root was “describe”, then “descriptive” was a base. The researcher applies the derivation theory of Fromkin et al. (2014) to the classification of affixes, which changes the grammatical classes of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. The interpretation relates to the quote under analysis and the focal point of derivational affixation. Keywords: Derivational affixation, thesis writing.
