Abstract
Elmita, 2024, The Challenges During the Kampus Mengajar Program: A Case Study of English Department Students. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training Education of Universitas Jambi in Academic year 2023/2024. The first supervisor is Dr. Fortunasari, S.S., M.A. The second supervisor Dedy Kurniawan, S.S, M.A. The purpose of this qualitative research is to describe the challenges faced by the students of English Department during the Kampus Mengajar program and describe the strategies to overcome those challenges. This research used the qualitative method with case study approach because it helped the researcher to do depth investigation. There were eight participants in this research, where three of them enrolled in Kampus Mengajar batch 4 and the rest enrolled in Kampus Mengajar batch 5. In collecting the data, the researcher employed the semi-structured interview. In analyzing the data, the researcher used thematic analysis (Braun & Clark, 2006). The findings showed that the participants of Kampus Mengajar during their placement had to face several challenges, they are; a. isolated schools’ location; b. improper school’s infrastructure; c. lack of learning facility; d. lack of learning resources; e. participants’ problem with the school’ teacher; f. participant’s problem during the classroom; g. students’ knowledge about English that still low; h. students’ low motivation in learning and bad behavior. The finding also showed several strategies that were used by the participants to overcome with the challenge that are divided into two parts, they are; a. using the internet and b. using various teaching methods, they are: games, singing, short story, group work, learn from picture (visual) and verbal warning to take the students’ attention.
