Abstract
Discourse markers are parts of discourse that are used to connect units of ideas, so they have the function of creating coherence so that the listener can understand what the speaker is saying. There have been many researchers investigating discourse markers, especially those in political debates. However, there is still a lack of research on discourse markers in debate competition. This qualitative research aimed to find out the types and the functions of discourse markers that are used by debaters of Universitas Jambi’s debate teams on University English Debate Competition. The data was taken from argumentation that contains discourse markers from final UEDC audio recording. In the process of collecting the data, the researcher downloaded, listened, and then transcribed the argumentation containing discourse markers using note techniques. For the data analysis, the researcher used Schiffrin‘s theory (1987) and Brinton’s theory (1996) to determine its type and function which consist of 3 steps namely data condensation, data display, and drawing & verifying conclusions. This research revealed that there were 5 types of discourse markers in 10 forms based on Schiffrin‘s theory (1987), they are markers of information management (oh), markers of connectives (and, but, or), markers of cause and result (so, because), markers of temporal adverbs (now, then), and markers of information and participation (y‘know, i mean). In terms of function, this research revealed that there were 7 out of 9 functions based on Brinton’s theory (1996), they are opening/closing frame marker, turn taker/giver, filler, topic switcher, information indicator, repair marker, and interpersonally. The principle of multifunctionality of DMs explained by Brinton (1996) also occurs in this research, which is when one form of discourse markers has more than one function. For further research, it is advisable to choose different theory to find various kinds of discourse markers.
