Abstract

This research aims to find out how English teachers implement classroom management in aspects of rules and routines, relationships, engaging instruction, and discipline. Also, the challenges they face while managing English classroom for young learners. This research is a qualitative descriptive method designed with observation and semi-structured interviews to collect data. The observations were done using observation field notes to see how the teachers manage the classroom. The classes observed using the Merdeka Curriculum with phase B were 3A and 4A, while in phase C, 5A and 6A. The interviews were done offline, using face-to-face interviews to get in-depth information from the participants. Two English teachers were participants: participant 1 in Phase C, 5th and 6th grade, and Participant 2 in Phase B, 3rd and 4th grade. As a result, it was revealed that the English teachers implemented four aspects in their classroom and the activities of each aspect of classroom management in phase B and phase C participants were different and similar. The significant differences are routine activity and discipline. Similarities in activity are mostly in the aspects of rules, engaging instruction, and discipline. Each phase's age and learning outcomes cause similarities and differences in classroom management. Also, there are four challenges in managing an English classroom: communicating in English, limited facilities, limited time, and the last challenge only in phase C is the inappropriate use of technology.
