Abstract

This study describes how English education students perceive movies as a learning medium for English and the unintentional aspects of learning which are most enhanced through watching movies in routine. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzes the perspectives of five students of English Education Study Program at Jambi University. Interviews were conducted in collecting the data of their experiences in learning English through movie engagement. Based on the research, it was revealed that the students enjoy watching movies across various genres, dedicating some free time to this activity. The students perceive movies as a fun and engaging way to learn English, citing potential benefits in vocabulary acquisition including slang and everyday language, pronunciation improvement, listening comprehension, speaking fluency, and cultural awareness. Furthermore, it was also found students’ unintentional gains in listening comprehension, pronunciation, grammar awareness, and speaking fluency through shadowing techniques. These findings highlight the potential of movies as a valuable tool for students to supplement their English learning, develop well-rounded language skills, and contribute to a more holistic learning experience.
