Abstract
Through this study, the researcher analyzes the United States 2020 final presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump to find sarcasm classification and its purpose. This study aimed to discover the classification and purpose of sarcasm in the United States 2020 final presidential debate. The data sources used in this study is the transcript of the final presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump in 2020. In analyzing the data, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method. The data in this research was obtained through documentation. The researcher utilized Camp‘s theory of sarcasm classifications and Attardo‘s theory of sarcasm purposes in classifying the data. The result of this research is the researcher found all types of classifications and purposes of sarcasm from the debate. Then, the dominant classification of sarcasm is propositional and illocutionary sarcasm, while for the purpose of sarcasm the most dominant is sophistication. The candidates apparently used these sarcastic remarks to mock other candidates. It is necessary to understand the characteristics of sarcasm and the context of the sentence in which the sarcasm appears in determining the expression of sarcasm. Then, utterances that are suspected to contain sarcasm can be examined more deeply. Furthermore, the researcher concluded that sometimes the meaning of sarcasm is related to sense or feeling and makes a logical analysis.
