Abstract

ABSTRACT Khairunnisa. 2018. The Effect of Mind Mapping Toward Tenth Graders Reading Comprehension at MAN 1 MuaraBungo. FKIP.Jambi University. The first supervisor is Hustarna, S.Pd. MA., and the second supervisor is LilikUlfiati, S.Pd, M.Pd. Key words: Reading Comprehension, Mind Mapping, Narrative Text This research is aimed at investigating whether mind mapping as a learning strategy give a significant effect or not for students’ reading comprehension at first grade of MAN 1 Muara Bungo, to find out the students perspective of learning narrative text using mind mapping technique and to analyze how do the tenth graders make mind mapping concept of learning narrative text in reading comprehension class. This research was classified as a quasi-experimental research. It involved 60 students from two groups, class X MIA 1 (30 students) as the experimental group and class X MIA2 (30 students) as the control group. The sample used in this research taken by Purposive Sampling Technique. The experimental group was taught by using mind mapping technique whereas the control group was taught by using a conventional technique. The data was collected by giving the test and questionnaire to the students. They were given the test to see whether mind mapping give a significant effect or not of students’ reading comprehension. Meanwhile, they were given the questionnaire to find out the students perspective of learning the material using mind mapping technique. T-Test formula was used to calculate the data. The result of the research showed that there was no significant difference score between experimental class and control class. It means that mind mapping technique give no significant effect of students’ reading comprehension of narrative text of the first grade at Man 1 Muara Bungo. This was based on the T-test result which showed that t-test>t-table (0.926 > 0.05). Then, it can be concluded that H0 was accepted and H1 was rejected. Yet, the result of the questionnaire shows, students were more motivated to learn after using mind mapping technique and it helps them to understand the material easily. Based on the result of the research, this research gives impact to the readers. Especially to the teacher and student that mind mapping is not suitable enough to use to teaching reading of tenth graders. Therefore, the teacher and students should be aware of choose the strategy in teaching learning process. In addition, this research could be used to compare another similar research.
