Abstract
Rock phosphate could be used as an alternative P fertilizer for plant as it contains a significant amount of P. However, the dissolution of rock phosphate is very low and its capacity to provide P nutrient for plant is very limited. Therefore, several ways to increase its dissolution should be done. Application of rock phosphate on acid mineral soils such as Ultisol is recommended, because rock phosphate can ameliorate both low soil pH and P availability. The objectives of this study was to examine the effectiveness of rock phosphate, partially acidified rock phosphate and rock phosphate mixed with superphosphate on P availability and corn yield. The experiment was carried out at research farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Jambi University. Four phosphate sources i.e. rock phosphate, superphosphate, partially acidified rock phosphate and rock phosphate mixed with superphosphate were used and each of P source consisted of three levels, namely 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg P2O5 total kg-1. The treatments were put into pots containing 5 kg of acid mineral soil (Ultisol) and corn was used as plant indicator. The results of study indicated that application of rock phosphate, superphosphate, superphosphate mixed rock phosphate significantly increased soil pH, available P, cation exchange capacity and corn yield, and decreased exchangeable Al compared to partially acidified rock phosphate. Among three P sources (rock phosphate, partially acidified rock phosphate and rock phosphate mixed with superphosphate) applied, rock phosphate showed a higher effectiveness in increasing plant P uptake and dry weight of grain, and rock phosphate mixed with superphosphate had a higher effectiveness on available P.
