Abstract

The aims of this study were (i) to acquire a formulation of organic fertilizer derived from POME and EFB and (ii) to obtain an appropriate dosage of organic fertilizer (compost) which effectively improve soil fertility of Ultisol and produce a high yield of soybean. The experiment was done from May to November 2010 in Village Tanjung Pauh and Mendalo Darat, Kabupaten Muaro Jambi, Jambi. Formulation of organic fertilizer was done by using three different sources of POME with two combinations with EFB and POME ratio of 1:5 and 1:10 for each of POME sources. Field experiment of organic fertilizer was done by using a randomized block design with five replications and five treatments of compost, namely control, 5 ton ha-1, 10 ton ha-1, 15 ton ha-1 dan 20 ton ha-1. From three weeks formulation experiment, it was obtained that combination 1:10 of EFB and POME from lagoon 2 provided the best compost that had 1,299% N, 0,65% P and 3,35% K and ratio C/N 16,01, while eight weeks compost had pH 8,12, 1,21 % N, 0,76 % P, 3,46 % K and ratio C/N 14,32. The results of field experiment showed that compost application increased significantly soil pH, organic C, total N, available P, exchangeable K and cation exchange capacity (CEC) and decreased significantly exchangeable Al. The content of N, P and K in plant, dry weight of ground above plant and seed were also increased with compost treatment. Application of 20 ton ha-1 compost provided the best effect on improvement of soil fertility and soybean yield achieving 2,04 ton ha-1.
