Abstract
The soil chemical properties of Ultisols are generally poor with low soil pH , organic matters, cation exchange capacity and macro nutrients such as N, P and K. In addition, some Ultisols that were abandoned after planting are grown with weeds such as Imperata cylindrica (alang-alang) and make the fertility of Ultisol getting poorer. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of lime and N, P and K fertilizer on the improvement of soil chemical properties of Ultisol and the growth of Calopogonium. The experiment was carried out at the Experimental Field of Agricultural Faculty, Jambi University, Mendalo Darat, Jambi. The treatments were arranged in a randomly blocked design consisting of (i) control, (ii) 2 ton ha-1 dolomite, 25 kg ha-1 urea, 125 kg ha-1 SP-36, 25 kg ha-1 KCl, (iii) 2 ton ha-1 dolomite, 50 kg ha-1 urea, 250 kg ha-1 SP-36, 50 kg ha-1 KCl, (iv) 4 ton ha-1 dolomite, 25 kg ha-1 urea, 125 kg ha-1 SP-36, 25 kg ha-1 KCl, (v) 4 ton ha-1 dolomite, 50 kg ha-1 urea, 250 kg ha-1 SP-36, 50 kg ha-1 KCl, (vi) 25 kg ha-1 urea, 125 kg ha-1 SP-36, 25 kg ha-1 KCl and (vii) 50 kg ha-1 urea, 250 kg ha-1 SP-36, 50 kg ha-1 KCl. The results of study showed that liming and fertilization of N, P dan K significantly enhanced soil pH, total N, available P, exchangeable K, and decreased exchangeable Al. In addition, N, P and K uptake, and dry weight of Calopogonium were significantly increased with liming and fertilization of N, P and K. The highest increase in plant uptake of N, P, K and dry weight was achieved by application of 4 ton ha-1 dolomite, 50 kg ha-1 urea, 250 kg ha-1 SP-36, 50 kg ha-1 KCl. The optimal growth of Calopogonium can cover soil surface and control the growth of weed such as alang-alang. In addition, Calopogonium can be used as green manure due to its high relatively content of nutrients such as N, P and K.
