Abstract

This research aims to explore the strategies employed by English teachers to motivate students in learning English at Pesantren As’ad Jambi. The subjects of this study were two English teachers teaching at the Madrasah Aliyah level at the selected pesantren. The study utilized a qualitative case study design, with data collection methods including semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and documents analysis. Data analysis followed Miles & Huberman (1994) Interactive Analysis Model, involving data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The research findings revealed a variety of strategies employed by the teachers to enhance student motivation, including real-world experiences, welcoming atmosphere, multimedia use, interactive activities, reward-based motivation (Candy, Stickers, Applause), etc. The study also highlighted challenges faced by the teachers, such as limited resources, varying levels of student motivation, and the prioritization of religious subjects over English. Additionally, the results indicated the significant impact of these strategies on students’ engagement and attitudes towards learning English. This research provides valuable insights into teaching practices at pesantren and suggests implications for improving English language teaching strategies, particularly in religious educational settings. Further studies could explore a broader range of pesantren for more comprehensive results.
