Abstract

This research aims to explore the translation strategies used by translators in translating Indonesian idiomatic expressions into English in the novel "Cantik Itu Luka". This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive approach with idioms as data taken from 9 chapters of the novel. Data analysis was carried out using 6 idiom translation strategies by Baker (2018) assisted by idiom classification by Fernando (1996) and equivalence theory by Nida (1964). The research results show that there are 35 idiomatic expressions in the novel "Cantik Itu Luka" which were translated using 4 strategies from Baker (2018), namely 5 idioms translated using an idiom of similar meaning and form, 6 idioms using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, 20 idioms using translation by paraphrase and 4 idioms using translation by omission of entire idiom. The translation by paraphrase strategy is the strategy most often used by translators. This can be caused by the translator not finding an equivalent idiomatic expression in the target language so the translator chooses to translate the idiomatic expression into a non-idiomatic form with an equivalent meaning in the target language.
