Abstract

The objectives of this study are to describe the translation strategies employed by the translator and to identify the types of meaning equivalence in rendering American slang into Indonesian in the TV series Brooklyn 99. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the data from a selected episode (Season 1, Episode 10: holiday theme: Thanksgiving) were chosen for its informal context. The data were analyzed based on Gottlieb’s (1992) translation strategies and Nida & Taber’s (1969) meaning equivalence. There were 14 data collected, the results showed that the paraphrase strategy was the most frequently used strategy with eight data (57.1%), followed by the transfer strategy with three data (21.4%). The condensation, transcription, and deletion strategies were used once (7.1%) each. The analysis also shows that the type of equivalence used in the subtitles leans more toward dynamic equivalence rather than formal equivalence
