Abstract
Background: Preterm birth is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. One contributing factor is intrauterine infection by Escherichia coli, which triggers inflammation and degradation of extracellular matrix components such as type 1 collagen. This collagen is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of placental tissue. Objective: To determine the effect of Escherichia coli infection on type 1 collagen levels in the placenta of BALB/c mice as a preterm birth model. Methods: This was a cross-sectional analytical observational study using secondary data from 28 pregnant BALB/c mice divided into four groups: N1, N2, P1, and P2. Escherichia coli was administered on day 15 of gestation. Type 1 collagen levels were measured using ELISA. Data analysis included the Shapiro- Wilk test, independent t-test, and ANOVA. Results: A significant decrease in type 1 collagen levels was observed in the treatment groups infected with Escherichia coli compared to controls (p<0.05). Group P2 exhibited the most substantial reduction in collagen levels. Conclusion: Escherichia coli infection significantly reduces type 1 collagen levels in the placenta of BALB/c mice, potentially contributing to the mechanism of preterm labor.
