Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Jambi in academic year 2019/2020. First supervisor: Lilik Ulfiati, S.Pd., M.Pd and second supervisor: Melati, S.Pd., M.CC Key Words: EAP (English for Academic Purpose), academic writing, need analysis. Based on the 2017 curriculum, writing for academic purpose course is a compulsory subject for the students of English Education Study Program. Writing for academic purpose is the new subject offered in 2017 curriculum, in which this course replaced paragraph writing in 2015 curriculum. Writing for academic purpose course is the introductory subject to writing in academic context. Then a question arises, whether this course will meet the need of students so it facilitates students to do better performance in the future writing course or not. This study aims to find out the second semester students of English department needs and problems in writing for academic purpose course. This study employed mix method design. The researcher used quantitative and qualitative method to collect the data. The study was conducted in English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in a public university in Jambi. There were 55 students, 3 lecturers are involved in this research. In this study, it is found that the students need more practice in each stage of writing or writing skills. The students also found that writing skills are difficult and the most problematic in writing for academic purpose is grammar.
