Abstract

Mathematical problem solving ability is an important thing that students must have. The fact is that students' mathematical problem solving abilities are still low, one of the causes of students' low mathematical resilience. This research is a qualitative research, aims to describe the process of students' problem solving abilities in terms of mathematical resilience and gender. This study used a purposive sampling technique with 6 research subjects in class VIII SMP Negeri 5 East Tanjung Jabung. The instruments used were a mathematical resilience questionnaire, problem solving ability test questions and interview lists. The results of the analysis show that subjects with high mathematical resilience have good problem-solving skills, are able to control their thoughts and develop strategies to solve problems. Subjects with high male mathematical resilience meet the indicators of mathematical resilience in solving problems despite experiencing constraints on the resilience indicator. Female subjects with moderate mathematical resilience have good perceptions of mathematics, are able to develop strategies despite experiencing obstacles and difficulties so they are able to solve problems well while male subjects have poor perceptions of mathematics and give up easily in the face of difficulties. Subjects with low mathematical resilience have poor problem solving abilities, these subjects have poor perception and knowledge in mathematics, are unable to develop strategies and easily give up in the face of problems or difficulties.
