Abstract

This study analyzes deixis and its use in the sea beast movie. There are several theories that can be used to identify the types of deixis, but Levinson's (1983) theory is the right one to use in this study because it describes the types of deixis completely. This study was conducted to find: (1) types of deixis used in the sea beast movie, (2) uses of deixis in the movie. This research used a descriptive qualitative method because this research used words as data. This researcher used a netflix production movie entitled The Sea Beast Movie with a total duration of 115 minutes. In this study, researcher found 5 types of deixis based on Levinson's theory. The data were taken from the utterances contained in the movie. The 5 types of deixis found are person deixis, spatial deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. These types of deixis are used to convey character relationships, spatial locations, time, and social roles. Deixis refers to the use of words or phrases that point to or refer to something in the context of a conversation or speech event. In the context of movies, deixis is used in the movie to convey crucial information about the characters, their actions, and the setting, helping to build the narrative by providing context and clarity to the audience. It also enhances the emotional impact of the story by allowing the characters to express themselves and their relationships effectively. The researcher hopes that future researchers have a deeper understanding of deixis theory that can help them analyze the data properly. In addition, the researcher suggests that future researchers use other media as data sources. Key words: Pragmatic, Deixis, The Sea Beast Movie
