Abstract

Pendidikan merupakan kebutuhan dasar yang berperan penting dalam membentuk karakter dan meningkatkan kualitas sumber daya manusia (SDM). Pendidikan tinggi turut andil dalam mencetak lulusan yang kompeten dan siap bersaing di dunia kerja. Namun, masih ditemukan ketidaksesuaian antara bidang studi dan pekerjaan yang digeluti lulusan. Dalam memilih program studi, calon mahasiswa mempertimbangkan berbagai aspek, termasuk ekspektasi terhadap prospek kerja, kualitas layanan, dan citra program studi. Program Studi Pendidikan Ekonomi Universitas Jambi mengalami fluktuasi jumlah peminat dalam beberapa tahun terakhir. Hal ini mencerminkan pentingnya memahami ekspektasi dan persepsi mahasiswa terhadap program studi agar dapat meningkatkan daya saing dan relevansi pendidikan tinggi di tengah persaingan yang semakin ketat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ekspektasi mahasiswa dalam memilih program studi pendidikan ekonomi Universitas Jambi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Untuk pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini dengan menggunakan teknik wawancara dan analisis data menggunakan teknik analisis tematik reflektif dibantu dengan software NVivo. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa Pendidikan Ekonomi angkatan 2023 memiliki motivasi beragam dalam memilih program studi, mulai dari minat terhadap bidang ekonomi dan pendidikan hingga keinginan berkontribusi pada masyarakat. Harapan mereka mencakup kualitas akademik, reputasi program studi, serta fasilitas pembelajaran yang menunjang kesiapan kerja. Namun, selama proses studi, mahasiswa menghadapi berbagai tantangan seperti keterbatasan fasilitas, administrasi yang kurang efisien, serta metode pembelajaran yang belum aplikatif. Di sisi lain, dukungan institusi dalam bentuk bimbingan, pelatihan, dan pengembangan karir turut memperkuat ekspektasi mahasiswa terhadap pilihan studinya. Mahasiswa juga menunjukkan tujuan karir jangka panjang yang jelas dengan keyakinan mereka dalam menyelesaikan studi ditunjang oleh strategi belajar yang mereka rancang secara mandiri. Rekomendasi penelitian ini adalah perlunya meningkatkan dan pembaruan fasilitas pembelajaran oleh Universitas Jambi untuk menciptakan lingkungan akademik yang kondusif. Program Studi Pendidikan Ekonomi disarankan untuk meningkatkan sosialisasi kurikulum, menyediakan layanan bimbingan dan konseling yang responsif, serta mengembangkan pelatihan keterampilan mengajar dan kewirausahaan yang relevan dengan dunia kerja. Education is a basic need that plays an important role in shaping character and improving the quality of human resources (HR). Higher education plays a role in producing competent graduates who are ready to compete in the work world. However, there is still a mismatch between the field of study and the work that graduates are engaged in. In choosing a study program, prospective students consider various aspects, including expectations regarding job prospects, quality of service, and the image of the study program. The Economics Education Study Program at the University of Jambi has experienced fluctuations in the number of applicants in the last few years. This reflects the importance of understanding students' expectations and perceptions of study programs in order to increase the competitiveness and relevance of higher education amidst increasingly tight competition. This study aims to determine students' expectations in choosing the economics education study program at the University of Jambi. This study uses a qualitative research method with a case study approach. For data collection in this study using interview techniques and data analysis using reflective thematic analysis techniques assisted by NVivo software. The results of the study show that Economic Education students of the 2023 intake have various motivations in choosing study programs, ranging from interest in economics and education to the desire to contribute to society. Their expectations include academic quality, reputation of the study program, and learning facilities that support work readiness. However, during the study process, students face various challenges such as limited facilities, inefficient administration, and learning methods that are not yet applicable. On the other hand, institutional support in the form of guidance, training, and career development also strengthens students' expectations of their study choices. Students also show clear long-term career goals with their confidence in completing their studies supported by learning strategies that they design independently. The recommendation of this study is the need to improve and renew learning facilities by Jambi University to create a conducive academic environment. The Economic Education Study Program is advised to improve curriculum socialization, provide responsive guidance and counseling services, and develop teaching and entrepreneurship skills training that is relevant to the world of work.
