Abstract
This research aimed to analyze Indonesian international students’ challenges in writing and publishing a journal article, and describe the strategies they used to overcome those challenges. The research used one public university in Taiwan as the subject area and employed a qualitative phenomenology method. The participants included two master students and one doctoral student who had successfully published their article in SCOPUS-indexed journal. Purposive sampling was used to select the appropriate participants based on the criteria. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of this research indicated that Indonesian international students experienced some challenges when writing and publishing a journal article which were divided into two themes, namely internal factor challenges which consist of lacking knowledge, expanding vocabulary, applying correct grammar, presenting ideas, organizing paragraphs, avoiding plagiarism and procrastinating. Another challenge is from external factors which consist of miscommunicating and adapting to environment. To overcome those challenges, the participants used some strategies that also divided into two parts. First, their internal strategies such as reading extensively, practicing critical thinking, improving English proficiency, focusing on structure, motivating themselves, and managing time. Moreover, for the external strategies, the participants are discussing with mentor, discussing with classmates, discussing with Indonesian international students, using academic facilities, and using technology. The findings of this study highlight the need for universities to provide targeted academic support and responsive mentoring to help international students overcome academic writing challenges. At the same time, international students are encouraged to develop proactive strategies, including self-motivation, peer collaboration, and independent skill to enhance their success in publishing journal article.
