Abstract

Thematic Progression can be one of the important factors while writing since it relates to the cohesive development of a text. A study analyzing twelve abstracts from an international journal in the SAGE Journal website was carried out to explore this. This study describes the theme and thematic progression patterns used in the abstracts. This study employs a descriptive-qualitative design. The theory of theme proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) and the thematic progression pattern proposed by Paltridge (2012) are used as the framework to analyze the data. The findings show that all the abstracts are categorized as: topical, textual, and interpersonal for the theme types; and constant, linear, and multiple theme patterns for the thematic progression. All of them have their role in making the character of the text. However, the researcher suggests using a more comprehensive variations framework or combining more than one framework to encompass all the clauses in a text. Keywords: Thematic Progression, Theme, Rheme, Abstract, International Journal
