Abstract

Alfirizqi, M. D. (2024). The Students' Perception on The Use of ChatGPT in Foreign Language Learning. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University, Academic Year 2023-2024. The first supervisor is Dra. Radiatan Mardiah, M.Hum. The second supervisor is Melati, S.Pd., M.CC. This research aimed to find out how EFL students use ChatGPT and to explore the advantages and disadvantages of using ChatGPT as they perceived. Mix research method with explanatory sequential design was applied. The respondents of this research were fifty EFL students of the 2023-2024 academic year at the English Education Study Program of Jambi University which were selected through purposive sampling. Combining close-ended and open-ended questions in a questionnaire was to collect the main data, and a semi-structured interview was carried out to clarify the main data. Furthermore, the quantitative main data were analyzed using Jeffrey’s Amazing Statistics Program (JASP), the validity was examined using the Bivariate Pearson method, while the reliability was assessed using Cronbach Alpha. The qualitative supporting data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that EFL students use ChatGPT for reading and writing activities. The students use ChatGPT by typing the prompt in ChatGPT message which involves crafting appropriate instructions for ChatGPT to produce desired answer and feedback. Meanwhile, ChatGPT has several advantages and disadvantages. The students perceived ChatGPT as easy to use, saving their time, enhancing their understanding, providing helpful feedback, interesting to use and delivering quick response. Although ChatGPT offer several advantages, it is unable to provide in-depth feedback, causing dependence on AI for assignments, hindering development of critical thinking, inaccuracy and unreliability concerns, lack of personalized guidance, and unable to provide the sources. Thus, it is suggested for further researcher to explore more on these advantages and disadvantages in a larger sample and use this research as a reference or comparison.
