Abstract
Keywords: Students’ Ability, Writing, Descriptive Text. The aim of this research was to investigate the students’ writing in descriptive text which regarded on developing ideas, organizing idea, grammar, vocabulary and mechanic in writing descriptive at the eighth grade of SMP N 1 Muaro Jambi. This research is quantitative research. This research involved 59 eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Muaro Jambi. The data were collected by using writing test and analyzed through descriptive statistics. The result of this research shows that the students’ ability in writing descriptive text at SMP N 1 Muaro Jambi categories as “Poor” because the students’ got the lowest score was 33%. It might be caused the students difficulties in using simple present tense, many of students lack of vocabulary, and they also faced difficulties in organizing ideas well. So that, the students writing descriptive text was inappropriately. From the calculation, 33% score showed that the Eighth Grades students have well in developing ideas and mechanic. The students got 55% score showed that the Eighth Grades students are good in developing ideas. It means that some of students are good in develop ideas and some of students unable to develop their ideas well. Next, the students get the highest score in mechanic around 75% showed that the Eighth Grades students are good in using mechanic. Meanwhile, the students did not have difficulties of putting punctuation and capitalization. Based on the calculation, 8.4% score showed that the Eighth Grade students have problem in grammar. It means that, the students got the lowest score in grammar. The students only few mistakes found in grammar component. Then, 26% score showed that the Eighth Grades students have problem in vocabulary. Vocabulary is another difficulty that students face in writing. Last, 9.5% score showed that the Eighth Grades students have problem in organizing idea. The students also got the lowest score in organizing idea. The students faced difficulties in organizing ideas because they do not know how to deliver it in English.
