Abstract

Background: Cigarettes are a major problem in developing countries. Smokers in Indonesia increase every year with the largest age range between 15-64 years followed by an increase in heart disease. Cempedak plants contain active substances flavonoids, phenols, and tannins which are active substances as antioxidants to counteract free radicals. This study aims to determine the effect of cempedak fruit skin extract and to determine the best dose that can prevent damage to the histopathological picture of the heart muscle. Methods: This study is an observational analytical study with a Post-test Only Control Group Design model. The rat heart organ was made into a histological preparation with hematoxylin-eosin staining technique and observed using a microscope with 400x magnification in 5 fields of view and assessed based on the Dallas cardiac histopathology scoring criteria. The observed criteria were inflammatory cell infiltration and necrosis. Statistical tests used One Way Anova. The hypothesis is considered significant if p < 0.05. Results: Observations found differences based on the scoring description of the extract treatment and control groups. From the results of the One Way Anova test, a p value of 0.03 was obtained where p < 0.05. Conclusion: Administration of cempedak fruit peel extract had a significant effect on the histopathological damage to the hearts of rats exposed to cigarette smoke.
