Abstract

This research aims to explain students' perceptions of ChatGPT as a tool for self-directed English language learning. This qualitative research involves four participants who have used ChatGPT for English language learning. The research results show that ChatGPT has a significant positive impact on the quality of student learning. Participants shows effective self-monitoring and management skills, as well as an awareness of the importance of integrating technology with other learning resources. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, influenced by the ease of access and response speed of ChatGPT, also participate to a better learning experience. However, participants also recognize the importance of balancing technology use and social interaction in the learning process. These findings in line with theories of self-directed learning, organized learning, and learning motivation, which indicate that ChatGPT can be an effective tool if used with an approach that considers social aspects and interaction in education. This research confirms the great potential of ChatGPT as a tool to enhance student independence and leadership in learning.
