Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the characteristics that lead to untranslatability and translation strategies of idiomatic expressions in Rick Riordan’s "9 from the Nine Worlds" and its Indonesian rendition. The study employed a qualitative research design to systematically identify, classify, and analyze the idiomatic expressions found in the original English text and their Indonesian translations. A total of 91 idioms were identified by the researcher. The findings revealed that most idioms (83) violated truth conditions, meaning their literal interpretations were nonsensical and relied heavily on figurative meaning. Additionally, 7 idioms were identified as misleading, presenting plausible literal interpretations that obscure their figurative intent. Only 1 idiom exhibited a simile-like structure. Despite their differences, these idioms shared a reliance on figurative concepts that do not have direct equivalents in Indonesian, highlighting their untranslatability.To address this, the study analyzed the translation strategies applied in the Indonesian rendition. Translation by paraphrase was the most frequently used strategy (79 instances), followed by using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (9 instances), and 2 omission strategies, which were applied sparingly. These findings suggest that the translator prioritized preserving meaning over maintaining idiomatic form when no direct equivalents existed in the target language. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of idiomatic translation in literary works by illustrating how untranslatability can be addressed through appropriate translation strategies. The results provide valuable insights for translators, educators, and future researchers in the field of translation studies. Keywords: Translation, untranslatability, literature
