Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the difficulties experienced by EFL teachers in managing the classroom and the strategies they used to overcome them at SMPN 11 Kota Jambi. The study's limitations were in three components: classroom setting, classroom rules, and classroom discipline. The researcher used a qualitative method with in-depth interviews to collect the data. The participants in this research were two 8th-grade English teachers at SMPN 11 Kota Jambi. Based on the result of this research, teachers’ difficulties in the classroom setting were: (1) an uncomfortable classroom setting atmosphere, (2) the physical condition of students who tend to be tired during afternoon lessons, (3) an unconducive classroom, (4) messy classroom. The strategies they used to overcome those difficulties were asking students to tidy up and clean the classroom before the learning process began. Teachers' difficulty in the classroom rules was some students who did not comply with the applicable classroom rules. The strategies they used to overcome those difficulties were: (1) conveying classroom rules at the beginning of learning, (2) having discussions with students who violate them, and (3) applying a disciplined culture. Teachers’ difficulty in classroom discipline were keeping students engaged in the learning process and being disciplined in completing assignments. The strategies they used to overcome those difficulties were: (1) having discussions with students who violate, (2) if there is no positive response from students, the teacher will collaborate with the classroom teacher, counseling teacher, and the school principal, also (3) making clear rules that agreed by students.
